A correspondent could not understand why two Conservative councillors have abandoned their party and joined UKIP, and not the Liberal Democrats.

The answer to the query is easy, the Liberal Democrats are now a spent force.

The result in a by election just a few days ago in the north of England proved that point, in which the Liberal Democrats finished a poor fourth.

The Liberal Democrats have been allowed to punch above their weight in the Coalition government, their support for open borders, human right legislation, foreign aid and support and Europe, plus their continual over interference in what are considered Conservative policies, have left them totally out of touch with the majority of the electorate.

As for UKIP I agree the need to prove to the electorate that they are very much more than a two policy party will be very important in any future general election, if they are to make any real headway.
