The people of Scotland have voted by a clear and unambiguous margin to remain in the union. It’s now time for a better deal for England and English taxpayers. That’s why I’m pleased that the Prime Minister has spoken about a new and fair settlement that applies to all parts of the United Kingdom.

Speaking immediately after the declaration of the referendum result David Cameron said: “We have heard the voice of Scotland — and now the millions of voices of England must not go ignored. The question of English votes for English laws — the so-called West Lothian question — requires a decisive answer.

“So, just as Scotland will vote separately in the Scottish Parliament on their issues of tax, spending and welfare, so too England, as well as Wales and Northern Ireland, should be able to vote on these issues — and all this must take place in tandem with, and at the same pace as, the settlement for Scotland.”

In my remaining months in Parliament I’ll be keeping a close eye on the details and pushing for the fairest possible deal for my constituents.

As I do so I would welcome the views of my constituents — using the contact details below — on this important matter.

I’ve been touched by the number of messages of support I’ve received since I announced that I will not be standing at the general election next year. I’d like to thank everybody who has taken the time to contact me — I have really appreciated all of the kind words. It has been a great honour to serve as a Member of Parliament in my home area. Until then it’s business as usual and I hope to be able to help many more people before my term of office expires.
