IN replying to the letter from Nick Baker, can I take the opportunity to thank him for his keen involvement in my personal development over many years.

I would advise him, however, to look behind the headlines and explore the facts.

The fact is our MP, the UKIP candidate and their shop have all used the Black Country Flag, and indeed why should they not?

Businesses, community groups, individuals have all embraced the flag and become involved in what was one of the most successful celebrations we have ever had.

I am surprised, however, that Nigel Farage, Eric Pickles et al have not been scrutinised as to “appropriation of Black Country Flag for Political purposes” even though they didn’t participate or visit our community unless for political purposes.

I am content this speaks volumes for the political opponents who would rather lodge a complaint against the only politician who has lived here all my life and assisted in whatever way I could to ensure the festivities were supported and successful.

I can smell the fear of those who are worried about a local politician wanting to promote our area and community rather than the historical position where Stourbridge has been used as a “parachute stop” for aspiring politicians who previously would have difficulty finding our town on the map, let alone visit.

I am proud to say I am going nowhere. Indeed I am confident I will be the only politician currently selected who will continue to live in our community irrespective of the result next May.

The very approach of “build it up then knock it down” is the clearest example as to why so many people become disengaged with politics. I note and welcome political opponents referring to me as “a good councillor and a decent politician”.

If opponents are referring to me in such terms, imagine what my friends say!

To be clear, the flag is a community flag, it has been flown in Bermuda and Brierley Hill, the World Cup and Glastonbury.

It has been a success not because of any politician or political party but because of the community. As a member of that community all my life, nothing makes me prouder.

Black Country and proud!
