I was amazed to see the article claiming safety measures had been introduced on the junction of Stourbridge Rd and Kidderminster Rd by virtue of the Council extending the kerb on the bend in order to force cars to slow in order that residents may reverse off their drives easier.

As I regularly cycle on this road I can assure you that it has made it anything but safe for cyclists as we are forced further out in the road, and also in effect narrowing the road so that cars and lorries are now in danger of colliding with us as they pass, which they have to do on this busy road.

It is not the only place where this “solution” has been used, we also have a similar obstruction on the junction of Bridgnorth Rd. and Vicarage Rd. in Wollaston, causing the same problem.

So if we are to see these kerb extensions used all over the place the safety of cyclists has to be considered.

The easy answer would be for there to be a narrow strip between the existing kerb and the extension so that cyclists can ride around the normal kerb away from the passing cars.

Please do not wait until someone is hurt to prove my point. We are committed to increase the use of bikes and safety is the main problem we need to overcome in order to get more people onto two wheels.
