Expenses scams will just go on and on

WHAT is the difference between a thief and a politician? When caught, a thief goes to prison a politician says sorry and gets away with it.

We have all heard over the last two weeks of the corruption by members of parliament and in the House of Lords and I will not bore you with it.

We are now told there is to be a new independent body to oversee expenses in parliament, just one point who will choose the people to carry out this work, Gordon Brown (who claimed £6,500 to pay his brother to clean his flat) or will it be all the motley crew in parliament?

Why should we stop at politicians? What about Qangos, who elect them, how much do they get paid for two weeks a year.

What about local councillors, how much do each of them get paid and how much do they claim in expenses.

Are there any councillor Eric Pollards lurking in the local town halls. They all squirm, because they are all tarred with the same brush.

If you look at local councillors, most are well past their sell by date.

Just one observation, the next gravy train will be leaving shortly.

My daughter has almost completed the first of four years at University in London. She, like the MPs, has to live in London for the purposes of attending her course. Unlike the MPs she/we have to personally fund this, including bedding, electricals etc.

She has to take out loans from the State to pay for her tuition fees and maintenance. When I went to University grants were available. This Government quite frankly has turned the nation from a land of opportunity to one of opportunists, that is, them.

The fund used to maintain these crooks until the next General Election could be diverted to our education system giving the intelligent but poor students a chance, just like the MPs had when they were young.

Sir

Despite the well publicised gulf , both in our political beliefs and the way in which Lap Dancing clubs are regulated I feel I must speak up for the Honourable Member for Stourbridge, Lynda Waltho.

The way Mrs Waltho has been castigated in certain sections of the press over allegations concerning her parliamentary expenses is both unfortunate and in my opinion, unwarranted. It should be perfectly clear to any of her constituents, not just forensic accountants that anyone furnishing a new house at public expense who spends a mere £8.32 on the purchase of a kettle is living nothing but frugally, in line with her Socialist pedigree.

Yours

Alastair Rose
