Let’s ask our questions face-to-face

IN view of the possible BBC programme as to how the political situation in Stourbridge may develop in the run-up to next year’s General Election.

Could I suggest that Stourbridge Town Council approaches Dudley MBC for the ‘Free Gratis’ use of Stourbridge Town Hall for one night and invites our local MP plus the other political candidates from the other political persuasions for a public meeting to explain their respective policies and answer questions from the floor of the meeting.

My reasons for this suggestion are, that I and no doubt hundreds of other voters are fed up with ‘edited sound bites’ and ‘press communiques’ and would much prefer a common sense question and answer meeting, which would give an opportunity to evaluate each candidate and their response to the questions they are asked.

Am I being naive, would the town consider this, would Dudley MBC consider offering the town hall at no cost for such a meeting or would this be beyond the capabilities of our local authority and today’s present resident and prospective MPs whose party whips would not be able to control the politicians answers to questions that may expose a particular political party’s agenda to be a fabrication of probabilities or an outright confidence trick.

No doubt there will be numerous objections ranging from the council not being able to afford the cost, the MPs and other candidates may not have the courage or ability for such a meeting without their party leaders approval, in which case democracy is ignored and our right for a truthful explanation to a dubious response is denied.

Which gives rise to the question, will those who profess they wish to represent us attend, so they can be seen by those who vote they are hoping to obtain?
