World Diabetes Day, on 14 November, is drawing our attention to the problem of diabetes and how to prevent it. A recent study found that a fifth of men aged over 50 didn't realise they had type 2 diabetes, which is alarming as type 2 diabetes, when undiagnosed and left untreated, can lead to heart disease, stroke, blindness, impotence and kidney failure. One of the big areas where men can cut their risk is trimming their belly measurement.
Trim that spare tyre Excess fat around the middle can significantly increase the risk of developing diabetes. For men, it's not trouser size that counts, it's the belly measurement. Keep it below 37 inches and if South Asian below 35.
Get active Fitting in some pulse-raising exercise each day will help deal with that troublesome waistline. Dig out that bike and go for a ride with the family or get together with friends for a friendly kickabout. Make everyday activities count as exercise by walking a bit faster and putting more gusto into gardening and DIY. Get the balance right Eating like a teenager won't help you trim down, if you're not burning off those excess calories. Reduce your portion size, cut down on takeaways that are high in calories, fat and salt and watch that alcohol intake - it will save money and calories. Fill up on colourful fruit and vegetables and other high-fibre foods.
Trim that spare tyre and start making those small but significant lifestyle changes to reduce your risk of developing diabetes and heart disease.
