Most dads are more at home preening flower beds than their faces, but you can still treat him to a grooming gift this Father's Day.

Whether he's the sporty, practical or DIY-loving sort, find a pampering product with his name on.

SPORTY DAD

If he's not playing sport, he's watching it. Be a star player on Father's Day by buying him a sporty themed grooming gift.

Now football season's over (until the World Cup kicks off, of course!), he can use his extra time to spritz and pamper, with Davidoff The Game Gift Set. This kit contains the aromatic and woody The Game 60ml eau de toilette with matching Hair and Body Shampoo, £39.50 (Debenhams).

If football and rugby seem tame compared to his daredevil pursuits, gift your action man dad with Paul Smith Extreme Sport. Fresh and energising, the scent is sure to spur him on to the finish line, eau de toilette from £22.50 (Debenhams).

Aid his red face recovery with Champneys Men Sports Therapy Moisturising Duo. The mattifying complex will help him stay hydrated but shine-free during and after a tough workout, £7.50 (Boots).

TRAVELLER DAD

Planes, trains and automobiles. If your dad is rarely in one place, make sure his grooming-on-the-go is a first class affair.

Appease his gentlemanly ways with the Dapper Something For The Weekend Refined Travel Collection. With extracts of sage leaf and black pepper, the shave cream, aftershave balm and hair and body shampoo should keep him in tip-top travel condition, £6 (Marks & Spencer).

Keep dad's travel essentials in one bright place with SewLomax Mens Travel Bag. The blue canvas material has a red lining to make grooming products and tools easy to spot, £28 (www.sewlomax.com).

Far-flung travel calls for exotic products. Present travel dad with Crabtree & Evelyn Men's West Indian Lime Traveller Gift Set. The mini products are scented with fresh limes and vetiver for a spicy scent, £24 (www.crabtree-evelyn.co.uk).

HANDY DAD

Encourage green-fingered fathers to treat their hands with the same TLC as their beloved blooming hydrangeas.

Dad can scrub up after composting with the Lovely Soap Company's Personalised Soap For Gardeners. The handmade natural soap comes adorned with your own personal message and choice of wrapping paper, £9 (www.lovelysoapcompany.co.uk).

Soothe his hands after a battle with the weeds and nettles using White Stuff Gardener's Barrier Hand Cream. The vitamin E-packed moisturiser will instantly revive tired, dry hands, £7.50 (www.whitestuff.com).

Launched at RHS Chelsea Flower Show, Organic Surge has cultivated a new Gardeners Hand Care Range. The Hand Scrub and Hand Cream are inspired by the beauty of British gardens with aromatic lime, basil and rosemary oils, from £7.99 (www.organicsurge.com).

SPEEDY DAD

He's into the fastest cars and the niftiest gadgets, so ensure his grooming repertoire matches his need for speed.

The first note of Ferrari Red Power is a rush of freshness that shifts up a gear with dashes of lavender and red pepper. The eau de toilette box is even designed to look like a perfect block of brushed steel, from £29 (Boots).

Keep your dad's skincare high-tech and streamlined with The Real Shaving Company Multi-Task Super 8 Balm. The multi-purpose product soothes razor burn, refines pores, combats blemishes and anti-ages in one speedy hit, £4.99 (Waitrose).

No time's wasted cleaning up the sink with Remington Vacuum Beard And Grooming Kit. The built-in vacuum technology efficiently sucks away discarded trimmings for mess-free grooming when he's up against the clock, £54.99 (Boots).

MALE GROOMING FORECAST

Grooming in 2014 is all about achieving the look naturally, according to Olivier Bonnefoy, founder of Gentlemen's Tonic. Here are his top trends for dapper gents:

:: UNDER COVER

Camouflage is the new black when it comes to covering up grey hairs. "Subtle hair tinting, which gives a more natural, blended look is in demand," says Bonnefoy. "It's about delaying the signs of ageing rather than eradicating them - the colour should enhance the overall appearance in the most subtle way without attracting comment."

:: WIDE EYED

Men are waking up to the benefits of eye-enhancing tricks for the wide-awake look. "Last year saw a d emand for treatments including semi-permanent eyebrow tints, eyebrow threading and waxing with bookings remaining strong," Bonnefoy reveals. "Natural but tamed is the request when it comes to eyebrows."

:: PERFORMANCE GROOMING

Sports performance is taking priority over looking 'manly' and natural. Bonnefoy says: "We have more and more men asking for grooming to enhance their sports and leisure - t his includes leg waxing for keen cyclists and all over body hair removal for swimmers. This extends to the growth of hair sculpting and styling products to achieve that neat, controlled look."

:: MOVEMBER MODE

Moustaches used to come and go with Movember, but now it seems they're sticking around. "Y ounger males especially are getting attached to their facial hair and requesting a neater, more classic moustache," Bonnefoy explains. "We're expecting them to get wilder to make an even bigger statement."

TRIED & TESTED

Whether you dad is a wannabe footballer, singer or actor, indulge him with a celebrity fragrance in his 'field'. Our male testers give their verdicts on three famous scents:

:: David Beckham Classic eau de toilette, from £19 (Boots)

If I can't look like David Beckham, I can at least smell like him with this woody, citrus spicy scent. It's a modern, masculine fragrance that smelt fresh and spicy on first spritz and dried down to warm, woody notes. Sadly, it didn't have major staying power. 3/5

:: Gold Jay Z eau de toilette, from £25 (Superdrug)

Inspired by his gold chains no doubt, Jay-Z's fragrance bottle is nothing short of bling but the scent is surprisingly clean. It's ideal for guys who prefer something fresher than some of the spicy, dry, heavy scents out there. 3/5

:: Jack eau de parfum 100ml, £95 (www.liberty.co.uk)

Actor Richard E. Grant's first foray into fragrance is surprisingly addictive with earthy and citrus notes and cheeky top notes of lime, marijuana and mandarin. The scent lasts all day but isn't overbearing on application. The only problem is that it's unisex and my partner has also taken a fancy to it... 4 /5
