DUDLEY boxer Ryan Aston and Rowley Regis' Jason Welborn are set for a Black Country battle for the Midland Area light-middleweight title next month.

The rivals will go head-to-head at Wolverhampton Civic Hall on Saturday, June 6 as part of the PJ Promotions’ “You Asked For It” contest.

Aston, who fights from Priory Park Boxing Club, said: “As soon as I moved down to middleweight, somewhere along the line, something was going to happen between us.

“I’m glad that I’m fighting and it’s exactly what people want to see.

"I am looking forward to the event. It’s one of the biggest fights of my career.

“We have been mates for years. In the ring it’s a completely different story.

"It’s a business and things will be done in the ring.”

Welborn added: “It all comes down to this fight now. This will be my fifth Midlands title fight.

“We will get it on and see who is the true champion. He’s a good talent and it will be a difficult fight for both of us but I mean business.

“We can go on to do better things but we need to be dealing with this fight first.

"First he is on my radar.

“I’ve been there at Midlands level and have nothing to prove, but it’s a fight that needs to happen.

“Hopefully, for whoever wins, there will be an English title in line.”

The Black Country derby between Welborn (15-3) and Aston (15-1-2) is the fight both boxers and every fight fan has asked for.

Welborn has won Midlands titles at two weights, twice challenged for British honours and beating him would send Aston shooting up right the rankings.

The event, in what’s believed to be a first, will also showcase three other Midlands Area title fights on the night.

Promoter PJ Rowson has also granted Redditch warrior Andrew Robinson (14-1) his wish to fight for area honours against Ilkeston’s Prince Dave Davis for the vacant super-middleweight strap in a fight that guarantees action.

Robinson last year gave Frank Buglioni - currently ranked number six by the WBO - all the trouble he could handle in an exciting back-and-forth punch up for the vacant WBO European title and had the fight been over 12 rounds rather than 10, he may well have won.

In Davis, Robinson meets a former Midlands Area middleweight champion who lost a fight-of-the-year contender to Jahmaine Smyle for the 12 stones belt.

Birmingham fans’ favourite Chris Truman has also got his wish.

‘The Trumantor’ wanted a shot at the Midlands Area light-welterweight championship and the fight with Luke Paddock goes ahead.Bloxwich’s Paddock, who also has links with Priory Park Boxing Club, won the vacant belt with the best win on his 11-0 (1) slate. He handed Josh McLaren his first loss in front of his Stoke fans last December, dropping him on the way to a wide points win.
