CONTROVERSY surrounded the postponement of Halesowen’s important league clash with Stratford on Saturday.

Club officials were left fuming when the umpires arrived at the ground only to pull the plug – despite an encouraging forecast for the remainder of the afternoon.

And the decision proved to be even more questionable as all other games in and around the area went ahead – and in general across the league.

A Halesowen CC spokesman said: “Over the last two seasons the ECB and the Premier Leagues across the country have been encouraged to ensure cricket gets played due to falling numbers and to make the best of things where weather is an issue.

“To this end all clubs and officials have signed up to the ECBs campaign known commonly as ‘Get the Game On’.

“The purpose of the campaign is to ensure cricket gets played every weekend and as such players, ground staff, officials and club administrators are all well-versed in the edict.”

Both captains appeared to be keen to play the game and Hales skipper Richard Brooker was clearly annoyed.

He said: “It was an extremely frustrating afternoon for everyone as we were disappointed with the standard and manner of the ground assessment conducted by the umpires and accordingly will be taking the appropriate action with the league management.

“This is in the hands of the club administration so I can’t say too much further at this stage. All we can do is focus on league leaders Tamworth next week and prove our worth as a top four team.”

The fourth team managed to get some play and moved up to second in the table – just five behind Astwood Bank.

Matt Slater took 5-23 and helped restrict Hanley Castle to 214 all out. Halesowen edged home with two overs to spare, thanks to an impressive unbeaten 83 from Ben Dunn.

This Saturday sees the first team at home to Tamworth (midday), the seconds go to Leamington (12.30), thirds head to Kidderminster (1pm) and fourths face Ross at home (1pm).
