DUDLEY Sports crashed 5-2 to Wolves Casuals at the weekend but the result took second place after promising 19-year-old Matt Hanson broke his leg while playing Sunday football.

Hanson suffered a double fracture while featuring for Stourport against Woodside in the Kidderminster Sunday League.

Sports boss Tony Gore said: "Everything else fades into insignificance after something like this happens. Everyone at Dudley Sports is completely gutted for the lad."

It's the second time Hanson has sustained a fracture having broken his leg as a 16-year-old when on Birmingham City's books.

The Hagley based player had to have 12 months out of the game to recover and only got back into playing with Dudley Sports last season.

Hanson was due to be operated on early this week and Gore admitted: "Matt's really down at the moment. He was having a fantastic season and we're just hoping he can come back. The club will be looking to do something for him."

It's the second serious injury to a Dudley Sports player this season after Matt Holland damaged his ankle ligaments and is expected to be ruled out for 12 weeks.

Sports were second best at Casuals and trailed 5-1 at one stage before Mark Gore narrowed the margin of the defeat from the penalty spot.

Prolific striker Liam Hughes hit home a hat-trick for Casuals with Kevin Nicholls and Dan Stokes also on the mark after Dominic Strevens had clawed the score back to 2-1 at one point.

The result leaves Sports sitting in second from bottom spot, with only Gornal Athletic, who have yet to pick up a point in seven games, sitting below them.

Sports were due to host high flying Malvern Town this week before entertaining Stone Old Alleynians at Hillcrest Avenue this coming Saturday.
