THERE was rare league disappointment for Old Cross Athletic in the Beacon Championship this week.

They had gone into Sunday's home clash against Bushbury Rovers with the league's only unbeaten record that stretched to seven games. But it was the visitors who gave further indication that they are serious contenders in this season's title race, running out 5-1 winners As Bushbury climbed into the top three, leaving Old Cross fifth, Rovers' top marksman Kyle Matthews, not for the first time this season, was in clinical form, notching four, pushing his personal tally to an impressive 23 goals. Simon Stokes made it a nap hand for Rovers, while Old Cross, who were previously undefeated in seven, replied through Adam Jones.

Second place FC Premier eased to a 4-1 away win at Whitmore Reans, netting twice either side of the break as Alex Cashmore (two), Elliot Milward and Troy Gardner inflicted the damage, with Wyra Mohammed responded. FC Premier are now level on points with Dynamo Dudley who have a better goal difference and a match in hand.

There was disappointment, however, for BCFA Sunday Amateur Cup holders Pensnett Panthers who fell at the first hurdle in this season's competition, bowing out 3-2 away to Wolverhampton Sunday league outfit Wrottesley Old Boys.

Pensnett led twice, through Jordan Langford-Hill and Ryan Cartwright, going into the break, before Wrottesley struck back on the hour, then with just five minutes remaining to sink the Beacon league club so early on in their defence of the silverware.

Pensnett official Paul Handley said: "It was sad to lose out in the way we did, especially after lifting the trophy last season, but we'll bounce back."

In the BCFA Sunday Vase, Dynamo Dudley had a walkover over Erdington.

Black Country Fusion got back to winning ways, running out 5-1 winners at Wyrley Targaryen's to chalk up a third league success.

The former trailed 1-0 at the interval, before slamming five second half goals thanks to Johnny Benbow, Callum Betts, Larry Adejada, Don Latham and Danny Benbow. On the mark for lowly Wyrley were Marlo Simmonds and Dan Crooks.
