LYE Town’s boss is staying positive despite his team’s impressive run of victories coming to an end after a 0-0 home draw against Coventry United on Saturday.

Co-manager Martin Thomas said he has nothing but good things to say about his side who just came up short in their Midlands League tie.

Thomas said: “It was very much like a cup final. Both teams had a couple of chances and it was a really entertaining 0-0. It was a very fair game and both teams deserved something from it.

“We were on top in the first half and hit the bar, but the longer the game stayed 0-0 the more they grew into it and had chances of their own.

“We played well, kept a clean sheet and didn’t lose, which was the important thing. But we’re going to have these kinds of games.

“Teams are gunning for us now and we just need to keep up the momentum for the rest of the season.”

The team will have a break this weekend as the club hosts its annual Christmas party, before returning to league action on Tuesday night (7.45pm) in their rearranged home match against Shawbury United.

Thomas added: “We were meant to play Shawbury on Tuesday, but we’ve had to put the game off until next week, which is not the ideal preparation for the Westfields game the following Saturday.

“But we will be able to pick from an almost full squad of players, as Chris Knight is back and would have played a part on Tuesday night if the game wasn’t postponed, so it’s just Kalum (Evitts) who is out now.”

Lye Town Ladies also picked up a point this weekend as they extended their unbeaten run to six matches.

A goal in the last 10 minutes from leading scorer Claire Williamson rescued a point for the Lyeonesses during an entertaining 2-2 away game at Leafield Athletic.

Lye went ahead early in the first half through captain Katie Priest, who spectacularly volleyed a headed clearance home from 25 yards.

Leafield were back into the game shortly before half time with a well worked goal, and only the heroics of keeper Kelly Walker kept the scores level at the break.

Leafield’s controlled passing game saw them ease ahead mid-way through the second half and had further chances to add to their lead with Walker again outstanding.

However, as the game wore on, Lye got a foothold in the game and pressed for an equaliser, which duly came from Williamson with a trademark burst into the box and finish passed the keeper.

Although Lye had chances to nick it at the death, manager Clive Rogers and coach Mark Ridge said they were satisfied with an away point against a “young and impressive” Leafield outfit.
