CHINESE New Year celebrations were a roaring success at a Stourbridge primary school with children taking part in a variety of fun activities.

Reception pupils at Ham Dingle Primary School, in Pedmore, got into the spirit of the traditional Chinese holiday by creating paintings and making dragons.

The children have been learning about the festival throughout the past two weeks ahead of Chinese New Year on Thursday, February 19.

Other activities the pupils took part in included creating Chinese blossom trees and learning about the different animals which represent Chinese years, with 2015 being the year of the sheep.

Jo Davies, headteacher, said: “Understanding the world is a key part of the learning journey for our children in reception and they have really enjoyed all the activities around the Chinese New Year.

“Parents have joined in too during our popular parent pop-in sessions.”

The celebrations finished with the children taking part in their own Chinese dragon dance on the school’s playground before eating Chinese food – complete with chopsticks.
