PUPILS at a Kingswinford primary school have spent a day helping to check the speed of passing motorists.

Year 3 children at Dingle Community Primary School have been learning about road safety in their lessons to raise awareness of road dangers.

To increase the pupil's road safety awareness, they joined police officers and Councillor Derrick Hemingsley as part of the Wordsley Community Speed Watch.

About 20 pupils at the Madeley Road school were given the chance to get out of the classroom and take part in traffic speed gun training.

Cllr Hemingsley, who launched the Speed Watch initiative in conjunction with West Midlands Police, said: “The whole of year 3 class at Dingle Community Primary School got the chance to have a go with the speed gun which they all thoroughly enjoyed using.

“As well as educating motorists about their speeds, the scheme educates children and gives them an understanding about the dangers of the road outside their schools.

“I have had a number of parents with major concerns about the speeding motorists outside the schools and I want to make it my aim to cut down speeding in the area.

“The current speed outside Dingle is 30 mph, but I would like to see it reduced to 20 mph outside all the schools in the area.”

The pupils used the new skills they had been taught as part of their written work throughout the rest of the week.
