Year 9 Pedmore Students and Head of Art and Design, Donna Tromans worked tirelessly on a fantastic scarecrow creation on behalf of Sunfield School, Clent. Sunfield is Pedmore’s chosen local charity and the schools special relationship as enabled many exciting projects to take place recently. This year’s festival was on the Movies and heroes and villains theme hence the Superhero “SuperSense” was created. SuperSense was a multi sensory scarecrow and people were encouraged to touch, smell and hear the array of textured surfaces, fragrant materials and wind chimes on his clothing and his cape. The cape was made by the students from Sunfield School.
We have just been informed that SuperSense won the prize for the Best Interactive Out Of Town Scarecrow! The prize money will be donated to Sunfield.
Donna Tromans said, “It has been a fabulous and truly rewarding opportunity working with the children and staff at Sunfield. SuperSense was created to increase awareness of the challenges that children with autism face. The character has no mouth to represent the struggles that people with autism have with communication. Our superhero was brightly coloured with reflective surfaces to visually stimulate. All materials used had different tactile qualities. SuperSense was adorned with scented charms made from star anise, turmeric and lavender on his cape and pockets filled with floral fragrances to stimulate the sense of smell. Our scarecrow could be seen flying from his painted and collaged background which featured the students from Pedmore Technology College and Sunfield busily working on its creation. We are delighted that the judges recognised our hard work and effort”.
Sunfield School were delighted with the collaborative project and final result. Georgina Forrest, Community Liaison Officer for Sunfield commented,“The sheer time, energy and enthusiasm to create the life-size ‘SuperSense’ superhero was clear to see. It was fantastic that our sensory design worked to reflect our children and young people at Sunfield, many who have over or under-sensitivity to various senses and the world around them. We thoroughly enjoyed working on the project alongside Pedmore Technology College’s students and staff and we’d like to thank them for sharing in and making the experience so worthwhile. We are delighted that our joint efforts have been recognised and subsequently, together we have raised awareness of our local cause”.
Pedmore Year 11 Student Leaders supported Sunfield further at the Festival by helping out at the Sunfield stall. Over £700 was raised as a result of tombola, gingerbread and craft sales.
