Yates swops chops for hooks

FORMER world karate champion Ben Yates is busy forging another career for himself in the rising sport of white collar boxing.
The 23-year-old from Rowley Regis reached the very top in shukokain karate, representing Great Britain on his way to the world heavyweight crown in 2008.
He said: “I spent 10 years doing karate and I reached my goal — now I’ve got another in boxing.
“I loved karate, but I literally kept on winning to point where it started getting repetitive. It got to the point where I wanted to do something different.
“I’ve always liked boxing since I was a kid. I went to Roy Skelding’s gym in Thorns Road, Lye where I met up with my coach Frankie.
“He moved to Lye Boxing Academy and I went with him.”
So far, Yates has won all four of his white collar fights and looks to extend that sequence to five in his next contest on Richie Wyatt’s promotion at The Arena in Stourbridge on September 7.
Yates added: “White collar boxing suits me. It’s like a bridge between amateur and professional boxing. It lets you test the water first.”
