Makeshift goalie Morton keeps cup hopes alive
5:24pm Thursday 22nd August 2013 in Sport
DUDLEY Town had to thank makeshift goalkeeper Luke Morton for keeping them in the FA Cup.
Midfielder Morton had to take an unexpected turn between the posts after the Robins had regular shotstopper Tom Harper sent off with half an hour of their extra preliminary round goalless draw with Shawbury United still remaining.
Manager Andy Wyton said: “Luke did a great job and pulled off two fantastic saves to keep us in the competition.
“We were supposed to have 16-year-old goalkeeper Will Hunt on the bench, but he couldn’t make the game because of family commitments.
“I looked on the bench and wasn’t sure what to do when Luke put his hand up and said he could play in goal. I’m glad he did!
Wyton bemoaned his side’s finishing and added: “We just can’t put the ball in the back of the net and we’re not doing ourselves justice.”
Wyton hopes to have striker Tom Gadd back for Saturday’s West Midlands League game at home to Smethwick and next Tuesday’s trip to Bartley Green.
