Clarke close to claiming first category

HAGLEY cyclist Matt Clarke is close to retaining his first category licence after picking up plenty of points at the weekend.
Clarke, riding for Wheelbase Altura MGD team came home seventh at Curbrough circuit race and then followed up with sixth spot at the Spirit Bikes road race which took place in Bedfordshire.
Clarke latched onto some key breakaways, but got caught and finally settled for sixth spot in the resulting sprint.
n Stourbridge cyclists were out in force this week at the opening West Midlands Cyclo-Cross League meeting which took place at Henley in Arden.
There were victories for Lorraine Gaytten in the women’s over-45 and Bryan Hedges in the men’s over-65 events.
Jayne Cheslin came second in the women’s over-40 while Kevin Payton was edged into second spot in the men’s over-50 contest by Kenilworth Wheelers Andy Webb who clinched victory by half a bike’s length.
Anthony Neave was third in the junior race, Derek Hill fourth at over-60’s.
