Pottinger: Heathens have plenty in reserve

CRADLEY boss Will Pottinger says his side have plenty in reserve for a successful season.

The Heathens will launch their home programme back at Wolverhampton this coming Tuesday when they face Coventry in the Travel Plus Trophy.

The first leg of the contest last Friday had to be abandoned after six heats due to heavy rainfall affecting track conditions.

Pottinger believes the signings of Matt Williamson and Danny Phillips could prove crucial as the club look to defend their National League clean sweep.

He said: “As we know, having at least one strong reserve is vital to any successful team but we feel that in Danny Phillips and Matt Williamson we’ve got two.

“We were slightly surprised Mildenhall didn’t pick up Danny Phillips after he guested for them a few times last season, so when we found out he was available we snapped him up straight away.

“When he did ride in the National League last year he scored plenty of points and looked more than capable of making the step up.

“He’s a much better rider than his 3.00 average suggests so hopefully we can see that ability translate to plenty of points.

“The same applies to Matt Williamson really, who is coming in benefiting from a year of experience at Buxton and having done a lot of practicing over the winter months.

“He’s made a lot of progress in a short space of time in the sport and we’ll be hoping that development can continue.

“We feel that we have two of the strongest reserves in the National League once again and we’re just hoping that proves to be the case.”

Heathens have called former favourite Ashley Morris up to replace unavailable skipper Paul Starke for Tuesday’s meeting which is set to pull in a bumper crowd with the return of the famous Cradley Heath name.
