GLASSBOYS boss Gary Hackett reiterated his desire to put things right at the War Memorial Ground after watching FC United of Manchester clinch promotion.

Stourbridge put in a spirited away showing on Tuesday night as they made United work hard for the 1-0 win that handed them Northern Premier League glory.

A 68th minute header from Greg Daniels proved the difference between the teams on the night.

The battling performance was a big improvement on last Saturday's dismal display against Buxton when Stour lost 3-0 at their last home game of the campaign.

Hackett said: "We beat them earlier in the season and made them fight for the win again at their place.

"I think our performances against them have shown the squad's potential once we improve the right areas.

"It was a much better performance than against Buxton and the players reacted after that.

The boss again highlighted his determination to rejuvenate the Glassboys.

"I will get the spine of the team correct and improve the weak underbelly of the side that has been so evident since the turn of the year," he added.

"I have spoken to the chairman and we both understand what needs to be done and where we want to be.

"This is the first year in 11 that we have had such a bad season. My team and I love proving people wrong and we will get to where we want to be. We know what needs to be addressed.

"This poor run has brought the character of the players into question as well. That is also something we will look to put right over the summer.

"It has been no surprise to see Stourbridge lads in the form of Josh Morgan-Parker and Sam Tye doing really well when they have been called on."

Against Buxton, the Glassboys were stunned by three early strikes.

First, Neil Stevens fired in from the edge of the box after just four minutes.

Goalkeeper Lewis Solly could only punch a Buxton corner to the edge of the box where Stevens, who had time and space to mis-hit his first attempt, eventually rifled into the corner.

It then took The Bucks just two minutes to double their lead.

Again it was all too easy as Shaun Tuton tapped in at the far post following a lofted cross from Stour's left flank not long after kick off.

Stour enjoyed plenty of the ball but often rushed it forwards looking in vain for front man Kayelden Brown.

Then, with only 22 minutes on the clock, Buxton made it three.

This time the goal was well worked as the visitors' striking partnership showed their potency.

Goalscorer Tuton did brilliantly out on the left to beat two men and drive his way into the penalty area. He then found Liam Hardy in a central position just inside the box for the forward to drill past Solly for his 24th of the season.

It was all too easy for the visitors as the Glassboys' confidence levels plummeted further.

They did eventually react well, especially during the second half, though you did always feel the visitors had more gears to call on if they'd have been required.

Stour will travel to Skelmersdale this Saturday as they conclude the current campaign.
