ANDY Wyton says he is already making plans to turn Gornal Athletic into title challengers next season.

The Peacocks currently sit in second spot in the West Midlands Premier with just one league game remaining, but missed out on promotion after Sporting Khalsa stormed to the title.

Wyton’s men failed to end the season with some silverware when they lost against Willenhall Town in the final of the Birmingham FA Floodlit Mid-week Cup on Tuesday night.

They lost on penalties at AFC Wulfrunians’ Castlecrost Stadium after the game ended 0-0 after extra-time.

But the Garden Walk gaffer thinks he knows exactly what is needed to improve his side over the summer.

He said: “I know what was missing this season and what we need to add for next season.

"There will hopefully be a few players coming in and a few going out as well.

“I am looking to add five or six players and already have a few irons in the fire.

“We haven’t worked hard enough at times this season and have been guilty of failing to show enough character when things haven’t been going well.

“That will be one thing we will be looking to improve.”

Gornal went into the final on the back of a 4-1 away win against Smethwick Rangers last Saturday.

They had to come from behind after the hosts bagged an early lead and held onto it until the hour mark.

A better second half showing eventually saw Athletic take all three points thanks to strikes from Geoff Hill, Alex Cowley, Matt Vaughan and Carl Martin.

“We were very poor in the first half,” added Wyton. “The players thought they could pass it around and get the job done.

“We spoke to them at half time and got them to do the simple things right. We battered them in the second half and got the win.

“The aim is to take the final half hour into our final and make sure we start well.”

Gornal Athletic’s last game of the season pits them against Malvern Town at home this Saturday.
