YOUNG Stourbridge Rugby Club players scooped a triple trophy haul at a major international tournament in Chichester.

Squads from the club’s under 9s, under 10s and under 11s made the long trip south for a two-day competition which included teams from across the UK and France.

The International Mini Rugby Series event took place on May 2 and May 3 at Chichester High School for Boys. Players from the Stourton Park club took first place in every age group which featured a Stourbridge team.

Stourbridge RFC mini and junior section vice chairman and under 9s coach, Tom Skinner, who saw his team collect their third major trophy in as many weeks, was keen to praise the spirit of the teams.

He said: “Sportsmanship was evident to anyone who witnessed the achievements this weekend. One thing that was really pleasing to see was our different age groups all supporting each other.

“This is only possible due to the great people we have who dedicate their time and efforts to the section. Special mention should be given to all the coaches and indeed parents who invest their own time week in week out.

“I also feel it shows what a fantastic opportunity the club has to nurture these young players and hopefully build a sustainable progression path through to adult rugby.”

Stourbridge players mixed miserly defence with powerful attacking play to claim their victories, all three teams remained undefeated throughout the tournament.

Tom Skinner added: “I felt the boys got their reward for all their dedication and efforts throughout the season.

“We witnessed some outstanding rugby played in the right spirit. All the teams showed a solid defence and attacking maturity above their years.

“The can all enjoy the summer and look forward to next season with real optimism.”
