LYE Town should have “no regrets” after a tight 2-0 loss at home to Championship side Burton Albion on Tuesday night.
Town’s co-manager Martin Thomas praised the performance of his players in the Birmingham Senior Cup loss against a Burton side which included six first team players.
Albion stars Stuart Beavon, Damien McCory, Tom Flanagan, Callum Reilly, Ben Fox and Marcus Harness all started to gain some match fitness, but Thomas was happy that his side managed to keep the score line down to a minimum.
He said: “I couldn’t fault the players on Tuesday night, defensively we were great as they were coming up against Championship strikers.
“We didn’t expect to play against first team players, especially six of them, so it was a great test for our lads.
“Burton are a quality team and are in the Championship on merit, but our lads matched them for fitness and pace, the only difference was in the final third.”
Tuesday’s defeat made it two losses on the bounce at the club’s Stourbridge Road ground after Lye went down on penalties against Highgate United in the Worcestershire Senior Cup on Saturday.
Thomas added: “I said last week that we’re not a cup team, and I think we’ve proved that with our result on Saturday.
“We were poor against Highgate, but I don’t agree with the lottery of penalties, I’d rather see the games go to extra time, with one player from each side coming off every five minutes.
“But we look ahead to the weekend and a tough, tough game away at Walsall Wood who will be out for a backlash after taking a battering in the cup on Saturday.”
Town go into Saturday’s Midlands League game with Walsall Wood (3pm) missing Kalum Evitts and Chris Knight, who is still struggling with a groin injury.
