GARY Hackett has praised his battling Glassboys for the way they've overcome a disjointed start to the season.

Stourbridge followed up last Saturday's 1-1 draw with Matlock Town by taking maximum points at Coalville Town on Tuesday night.

Jordan Archer netted his second in as many games to hand his side a 1-0 win at Owen Street.

Archer latched onto a through ball on 16 minutes before getting the better of the on-rushing Ravens keeper Matt Coton and lashing the ball into the net from ten yards.

Both performances have seen Stour far from top gear but it's the character of the players that has pleased Hackett most.

He said: "It was a really pleasing win," said Hackett. "The game was very similar to Matlock as we took a while to get going in the first half but improved in the second.

"Every team wants to get points on the board early on and we've managed to do that.

"It's clear we're not at our fluent best yet, I'm aware of that, but there is a lot to be said for the way we have battled to grind out the results so far. That character has got us through so far, which is pleasing in itself.

"There is room for improvement, which is maybe to be expected with the changes we've made, but the more we play, the more we train, the better we're going to get."

On Archer, Hackett added: "We lost Luke (Benbow) in the summer and while Jordan is a different type of forward hopefully he has realised that he can step up and score the goals we need.

"He has started really well for us. Not only has he chipped in with goals but he's also lead the line well too."

Meanwhile, fellow forward Brandon Hague has signed a contract with the club for the remainder of this season.

There is also an option for the Glassboys to extend the contract for a further year at the end of this campaign.

The 19-year old has impressed many since making the step up from our youth team into the first team set-up last season after netting 27 goals for Dave King's successful youth side in 2015-16.

Unfazed by the move into the senior ranks, he chipped in with some valuable goals in the first half of last season, notably away at both Nantwich and Marine in the league.

His season was later curtailed by a long-term ear infection but he bounced back with an impressive cameo from the bench against Matlock when replacing the injured Kayelden Brown.

Brown is set for a spell on the sidelines after injuring his knee in the season opener.

It means the Glassboys' boss is on the hunt for a winger to bolster his attacking options.

Stour will look to build on their decent start when they go to Whitby Town this Saturday. That will be quickly followed by Monday night's home clash with Nantwich (7.45pm).
