STOURBRIDGE'S Ian Garvey has been crowned over-70s champion at the 2018 National Squash 57 Championships.

Squash 57 was previously known as Racketball and the championships were held at Edgbaston Priory Club between Friday, July 6 and Sunday, July 8.

Garvey secured his final place with 3-0 wins over Priory's John Shingler in the quarters and Solihull's John Hopkins in the semis.

The final against Leicester's Hans Bilson was a very tight 50 minute encounter with Garvey battling through for the win three games to one.

Garvey upset the odds against the tournament favourite and number one seed to take the win.

He has been a member of Stourbridge Lawn Tennis and Squash Club for over 40 years having played county squash before turning to racketball in the late 80s.

The victory in this years championships was all the more remarkable as Garvey has recovered from major hip surgery in 2009 and full shoulder reconstruction surgery in 2012. As a result, he has not participated in the nationals since 2008.

It means he has now won 19 national titles to date spanning 30 years.
