HALESOWEN athletics star Dom Cunningham held his nerve in front of a packed arena in Glasgow to secure floor gold at the 2018 European Championships.

Cunningham, from City of Birmingham Gymnastics Club, put in a floor routine that was packed full of big tumbles with his landings near faultless and his execution score high, giving him a massive score of 14.666.

It was his third impressive floor routine of the championships showing great promise and consistency.

There was then a nervous wait for Cunningham to find out where he had placed before the final routines were complete, but his score was good enough to win the title.

After receiving his medal, he said: “It’s not been easy but to be here now with this gold medal and listening to our national anthem, it’s a surreal moment for me but I’m ready for more feelings like this.

“The crowd were phenomenal. They don’t have to be here, but they gave me so much support. The noise in there was crazy.

“Waiting for that final score to come in, my heart was going. Beforehand I would’ve been happy with silver, but knowing you’re that close to gold, it just means so much.”
