Gornal boost survival chances

GORNAL Athletic's battle for Midland Alliance survival has been boosted by back-to-back home wins.

Andy Wyton's side backed up a 5-1 win against local rivals Tipton last Thursday with a 2-0 victory over Alvechurch at Garden Walk on Saturday.

The wins have lifted The Peacocks out of the Midland Alliance relegation places to fourth from bottom.

Wyton now wants his side to keep up the momentum as they continue their survival fight into the last weeks of the campaign.

"Those two home wins on the bounce have really helped us. I had targeted another nine points from our remain games, but we have got six straight away. That was just what we needed," he said. "We now need to make sure we carry on the way we have been playing and carry that momentum into the run-in.

"There is still a long way to go but it is in our hands."

Wyton also hailed the important role that Gornal's fans played in the victory over rivals Tipton.

"We had a really good turn out. People came in numbers and supported the team and I think it made a big difference.

"That is just what you need when you are down there fighting for everything you can get. I can't praise the fans enough for the atmosphere they created and the support they showed the team," he added.

Gornal are now set to take on Stourport Swifts away this Saturday.

Wyton said: "I'm expecting a very tough game against Stourport. They are a good team and are more than capable of causing us lots of problems. But will go there with a lot of confidence and will be looking to get what we can."

Crucial games during the run-in will see Gornal taking on fellow strugglers Heather St John's and Heath Hayes, who they take on in the last game of the season.

They will soon be without Ash Greenaway following his red card against Alvechurch.
