ATHLETES from Dudley Kingswinford spent the weekend rubbing shoulders with the elite as runners competed in the Midland Counties Road Relays at Sutton Park on Saturday afternoon and the Worcester 10k the following morning.

The ‘blue hoops’ were able to send a large force towards Birmingham with both the men and women managing to field two teams. In the men’s event, six stages of a distance of 5.85k, DK’s A team of Matt Biggs, Kevin Duckworth, Dave Norman, Rob Sannwald, Simon Hughes and Steve Wood finished in 46th in a total time of 2.15.13.

In the women’s event, DK’s A team of Lorna Hulme, Karen Doy, Carol Fisher and Helen Davies covered the 4 x 4.31k distance in 1.21.28 to claim 54th place out of the 93 teams that started.

On Sunday, a number of DK athletes lined up in Worcester with nearly 1,400 runners, including former GB star Paula Radcliffe.

l Dudley and Stourbridge Harriers' senior men finished an excellent 17th in the Midland Road Relays. Lee Slater (18:18), Paul Waby (20:12), Dave Ratcliffe (20:46), Dave Nation (20:09), Scott Palmer (21:40) and Robert Meredith (20:54) the athletes involved.

The under-15 boys came 29th, the under-13 girls 30th.
