Evans returns but Stour hit for six

STOURBRIDGE FC welcomed back fan favourite Sean Evans but his return turned into a nightmare as the Glassboys were hammered 6-1 at Cambridge City.

The wing wizard has re-joined on a months loan from AFC Telford but was subbed at half-time as Stour slumped to their heaviest defeat of the season at Milton Road.

It capped a miserable few days on the pitch for the Glassboys, who conceded two goals in stoppage time to draw 4-4 at Bashley on Saturday.

Manager Gary Hackett could not hide his disappointment at the results and admitted to getting his tactics wrong at Cambridge.

He said: “You could say the wheels have come off and that’s true on many levels as the coach broke down on the way to Cambridge as well!

“I will put my hands up and accept my share of the criticism, I set us up to play too open and expansive.

“They were a very good side and picked us apart. We had too many players who were below par and it’s probably the first time this season you could say that.

“Against Bashley it was very unfortunate we did not defend well late on, it was certainly two points dropped.”

Evans’ return should boost Hackett’s somewhat thin squad.

The former Manchester United reserve spent three months at Amblecote before departing for Telford in November, having played a crucial role in Stour’s run to the first round of the FA Cup.

After the slow start at Cambridge, Hackett hopes it will not be long before the winger is up to speed.

He said: “Maybe I was expecting a little bit too much from Sean, he has been in and out of the side at Telford and has lost a bit of form.

“It was a difficult thing for him to come straight back into the side but you don’t lose class and I’m sure he will be an asset to us in the coming weeks.”

Stourbridge have played just 11 times at Amblecote this season but now face a run of four consecutive home fixtures, starting with the visit of Hemel Hempstead Town on Saturday before a re-match with Cambridge on Tuesday.

Meanwhile defender Sam Smith is the subject of a seven day approach from rivals Halesowen Town.

The centre back turned down a move to Hednesford Town last month.
