THE Glassboys’ red and white stripes have been flying high on Sunday afternoons thanks to Stourbridge Veterans.

The Vets side contains a number of former Glassboys players who go through their paces every fortnight.

And they have been given a real boost over the past couple of years as legendary West Bromwich Albion striker Bob Taylor regularly features for them.

Spokesman Darren Aldersen added: “We don’t like losing and we’ve been giving Bob a bit of stick recently, because we don’t think he’s been scoring enough goals!

“We used to get the traditional 10 men and a dog watching our games. “But since Bob’s been playing, he’s added another 200 to the crowd, although that’s dwindled a little bit recently.”

Taylor scored 113 goals for Albion in 324 appearances, and also played for the likes of Leeds United and Bolton Wanderers.

Glasssboys of the past like Stan Jones, Tim Nicholls, Adam Bastable and Peter Gocan regularly turn out for the Vets.

Darren confirmed: “We used to play at Swinford Road in Stourbridge, but now we play on the astro turf at Thorns School in Quarry Bank.

The Vets are restricted to over-35 players and compete in the West Midlands Friendly Combination League – which they have won four times in the past five years.

They’ve also plied their skills on a wider stage, travelling to the likes of Cardiff and Burnley in the National Umbro Cup, where they reached the quarter finals.

The side is mainly made up of local former Non League standard players from the Stourbridge area.

The Vets are always on the lookout for new players and if anyone is interested they can contact joint managers Clive Stokes on 07966 175576 or Giles Parry on 07714 684859.

The Vets are at home on Sunday to Brereton (2pm kick-off)
