CAUSEWAY United chairman Steve Hulston has insisted all is well at the club and that he is backing young manager Carl Burley.

Hulston responded this week to perceived criticism of the situation at Causeway after their exit from the FA Vase at Stratford Town.

He called Burley ‘hard working and committed to the cause’ and stressed the manager had done well since he took over.

And he admitted his expectations were high and that maybe Causeway had reached the highest level they could under his chairmanship.

Hulston said he would never shell out money on players wages because even if the club progressed up the leagues, it would turn into a bottomless pit, with little chance of establishing themselves or getting it back.

He said: “When I took over as chairman 18 years ago I said I would take the club as far as I could possibly go without paying a playing budget.

“Maybe we have reached that stage but I refuse to compromise on that pledge in order to try and progress because I see splashing the cash as the root of all evil.

“We have a good manager in Carl and I will back him 100 per-cent on his record, although I do think the Midland Alliance is not as strong as it has been in past years, “And I do expect us to beat the likes of Stratford, who after all are below us in the league, but again maybe that is me being unrealistic when they are able to spend money on wages.

“People don’t see the hard work that goes on behind the scenes here, the endless work on matchdays and arranging travel, kit, hospitality and things like that.

“And when they say there is no budget, well maybe they are correct for wages, but it costs a lot of money to run a club behind the scenes, most of which is provided by me.

“I don’t mind because I love the club as does everyone who works off the field, and some on it, and that is the way it will stay as long as I am chairman.”

Hulston said he wanted to put any differences of opinion behind him and concentrate on results, starting with a league game at Coleshill Town on Saturday (3pm).
