Going up: Higgins rules out big changes after DK promotion
8:42am Thursday 3rd May 2012 in Dudley Kingswinford RFC
JON Higgins has ruled out big changes at Dudley Kingswinford after they secured back-to-back promotions.
The Heathbrook outfit will play in National Two North next term following their thrilling 36-27 National Three play-off win over Rossendale last Saturday.
Joint player-coach Higgins admits the speed of their success has surprised everyone at the club, coming just 12 months after they clinched the MIdlands One West title.
But he has promised DK will be as ready as they can be for a league where they will face a derby clashes with neighbours Stourbridge and Bromsgrove.
He said: “In all honesty promotion has come a year sooner than we expected.
“People ask are we ready to go up? Well, we don’t really have much choice.
“We are not going to be recruiting massive amounts of players. The players who have got us to this stage will get the chance to prove themselves at a higher level.
“There may be times when we suffer heavy defeats but I’m confident we have the players who can survive in that league.”
A crowd approaching 1,000 were treated to a fantastic spectacle, as DK overturned a 22-14 half-time deficit to beat the stubborn visitors.
The result was in the balance right up until the closing stages and fittingly it was Higgins who sealed it for the hosts with a try in stoppage time.
Despite the tight nature of the game, Higgins says he was always confident even when his side were trailing.
He said: “I always felt the wind was worth about 14 points and we had it in our favour in the second-half.
“We had to be patient, we knew they were not going to be mugs or they would not be in the play-offs.
“When we had an opportunity to score, we had to make sure we did.
“I guess it was a lot worse for our fans watching but I was always pretty confident.
“I knew we had enough quality that if we had to score a try we would.”
