Luctonians 5 Stourbridge 13
9:02am Tuesday 29th January 2013 in Stourbridge RFC
STOURBRIDGE RFC got their season straight back on track with a hard-fought win at Luctonians.
The Saxons bounced back from their shock defeat to Bromsgrove with victory on a gluepot playing surface which had to be cleared of snow before the game.
Luctonians dominated the opening ten minutes, forcing a number of penalties.
But they opted to go for touch each time rather than attempt the points and after Stour had held out, Caolan Ryan gave the visitors a 6-0 half-time lead by slotting two penalties.
The deteriorating conditions were making it tough for either side to move the ball at speed but Stour made use of a second half breeze to ramp up the pressure.
Ben Hughes was put clear but couldn't hold on to the pass, before Tom Jarvis was unlucky to be adjudged to have knocked on when trying to ground Lucas Roy-Smith's chip into in-goal.
Finally the breakthrough arrived when Ejike Uzoigwe, on for James Rodley, picked up a loose ball and broke tackles before crossing unchallenged to score under the posts.
Luctonians looked for a way back but their only score came on the game’s final play, with Stour’s Sione Tu’ipolotu in the sinbin.
Coach Mike Umaga said: “We came here looking for a win to get our season back on track and the boys did really well to keep their focus in difficult conditions.
“They threw everything at us - as we knew they would - but we were dominant in attack and our defence held strong.”
