Glassboys looking up
Wonder strike: Leon Broadhurst hit a 94th minute volley to see off Leamington on Monday.
Wonder strike: Leon Broadhurst hit a 94th minute volley to see off Leamington on Monday.

Stourbridge FC boss Gary Hackett will be hoping lady luck will remain an ally of his promotion pushing side after Leon Broadhurst smashed in an unstoppable 94th minute volley to defeat high-flying Leamington.

The Glassboys boss admitted his team were fortuitous to pick up a 2-1 home win over their BGB Midlands Division One play-off rivals after watching Lewis Solly pull of a string of fine saves and also seeing a strong penalty appeal for the visitors turned down.

Hackett said: "It was a great win for us on the back of an impressive victory against Chasetown.

"To pick up a victory over one of your promotion rivals when you are not playing particlurly well and are without our normal fluency going forward is brilliant and to score a 94th minute winner shows great resiliance on our part.

"We rode our luck because I'm sure Leamington left feeling a bit hard done by having nothing to show for their efforts.

"But as I said to the players after the game these things happen in football and you should take advantage of the rub of the green while you have it.

"For instance when we lost four out of our opening five league games it was not deserved."

The Leamington victory has pushed Stourbridge up to fifth in the table, and they are now on an impressive seven-game unbeaten streak.

The manager belives this has given them a real fighting chance of making the play-offs.

He said: "We have put ourselves in a great position which has given us a realistic chance of making the play-offs.

"The key for us is to now hold our nerve and keep everyone fit.

"We will just be taking it one game at a time, because no matter whether you are playing a team at the top or the bottom of the table there are only three points to play for in any one game."

The Glassboys will travel to Cinderford Town on Saturday (3pm kick-off) before welcoming Bishops Cleeve to Amblecote next Tuesday (7.45pm kick-off).

Hackett is resigned to being without Rob Taylor (knee) and Ryan Broadhurst (ankle) for the clashes and is sweating over the fitness of influential left wing-back Damian Whitcomb who injured his foot in the Leamington triumph.

One player who will be back in contention is Gavin Whinsper after he served a one-match suspension.
