Hitting top form
Striker Mark Bellingham has been out injured since January
Striker Mark Bellingham has been out injured since January

Stourbridge FC are showing no signs of promotion-pushing jitters after they picked up their sixth straight league victory away at Chesham United on Tuesday evening, to catapult themselves into third-place in BGB Midlands Division One.

The Glassboys are now unbeaten in their last 10 games and are the form side in the division, and all this has been achieved without top goalscorer Mark Bellingham.

The club's leading marksman has been out of action since January with knee ligament damage and is set to be missing until next season, but after some early teething problems Gary Hackett's men have settled down well and have strung together a sensational sequence of results.

Hackett said: "We have now picked up 28 points from 30, which is an incredible return when you consider we are playing without the best striker in the league.

"Full credit must go to the lads because they have been magnificent.

"The sure will-power and determination they are putting into games is simply first class and they are picking up the just rewards.

"But as I have said on many occasions this year we have done nothing yet and there are still five games to go and we must keep going if we want to achieve something this season."

The Glassboys picked up a 1-0 win at home to Dunstable on Saturday thanks to a Callum Martin goal and then followed that up with a triumph at fellow play-off hopefuls Chesham.

Hackett was particularly pleased with the mid-week victory.

He added: "It's a long journey to Chesham on a Tuesday evening and a number of the players had to take time off work, but victory made all that effort worthwhile.

"It was a real determined performance and showed how we have now become a hard team to beat.

"Credit must also go to the loyal band of supporters who travelled down to the game to cheer us on because their support was really appreciated by the players."

The Glassboys are set for another busy week of action starting with a home game against Rothwell on Saturday (3pm kick-off) before heading back to Chesham on Monday evening to play Aylesbury United (7.45pm kick-off).

Hackett is likely to be missing the injured trio of Damian Whitcombe, Lee Bullimore and Ryan Broadhurst for the two games and is also resigned to being without striker Rob Taylor for the rest of the season after he picked up yet another knee injury.
