Dyson seals victory with sucker punch
On the attack: Sam Rock runs at the Sutton defence.
On the attack: Sam Rock runs at the Sutton defence.

Stourbridge 1 Sutton Coldfield Town 0 STOURBRIDGE weathered the treacherous conditions with an impressive display to book their place in a mouth-watering final at Leamington on Saturday.

A torrential pre-kick off downpour put this game slightly in doubt but the pitch held up quite well and it was Stourbridge who adapted to the conditions better in the first half.

They applied early pressure through a series of corners which came to nothing but it was a defensive mishap in the 13th minute that gave them their first real chance to open the scoring.

A long ball forward was never really cleared and bobbled about in the box until it reached James Dyson who crashed it home.

This signalled the start of a mini attacking onslaught by the Glassboys, with Kyle Hadley and Andy Wright particularly influential.

On 22 minutes, Wright picked up a poor pass from a Sutton player and went on a run, eventually putting a cross into the box which Sam Rock tried to reach but he was upended, with Stourbridge's shouts for a penalty turned down.

Wright again was influential when he sent in another cross which Leon Broadhurst narrowly failed to reach before goalkeeper Chris Gemmell.

The second half saw the tables turned somewhat with Sutton looking to get the goal back that would take the game into extra time.

Mykell Beckley produced a good run and low cross which was safely turned wide by Ross Collins and then a shot by Adam Hughes was well saved by Lewis Solly.

Stourbridge's best chance of the half came when Kyle Hadley ran free but his shot from a wide angle went well wide.

In the last 20 minutes Stourbridge soaked up plenty of pressure from a Sutton side who produced surprisingly decent passing football in the wet conditions, but Stourbridge's lead never seriously looked under threat.

This was an assured all round performance by Gary Hackett's men and if they can keep cool under what will be considerable pressure at Leamington, they should have every confidence of coming through.

Line-up: Solly, Rock, Winsper, Collins, Hadley, Bennett, Slater, L Broadhurst, Wright, Dyson, Whitcombe.

Subs: Martin (for Wright 65 minutes), R Broadhurst (for Rock 78 minutes), Jones, Mahon, Brookes.
