WORCESTERSHIRE promising young duo opener Ollie Westbury and paceman George Scrimshaw have signed new contracts with the County.

Westbury and Scrimshaw put pen to paper last summer on their first professional deals at New Road.

Now the 19-year-old pair - two more products of Worcestershire flourishing academy system - have committed their futures to the club via substantial contract extensions.

Westbury enjoyed a fine 2016 campaign with the Seconds which led to him being selected for England Under-19s and scoring a superb 196 on his 'Test' debut against Sri Lanka at Fenners.

The Dudley-born player has a thirst for occupying the crease but this winter has worked on broadening his stroke-play and has made a successful start to the 2017 season.

Scrimshaw is regarded as one of Worcestershire's brightest young bowling prospects along with Josh Tongue although he is currently recovering from a stress fracture of the back.

England have also recognised his potential with an Under-19s call-up last summer - although he had to withdraw with a toe injury - and being part of a Young Lions training camp in the UAE during the initial part of the winter.

Director of cricket Steve Rhodes is delighted to have secured the services of Westbury and Scrimshaw for the forseeable future.

He said: "With Ollie, we have been very pleased his work ethic in the winter. After his successes of last year, seeing him work close up in the winter and also the start of the summer, we are very optimistic he can play a major part at Worcester.

"He has played for England Under-19s and to secure players like that is brilliant for the club going forward and hence the reason for wanting Ollie to be a Worcestershire player for years to come.

"It is testament to his hard work and the way he has impressed people but also the way he started the season.

"He is an old school opener but one of the areas he has worked on this winter is expanding his game and his shot play was there to be seen by the guys who saw him get a very good 80 against Warwickshire not too long ago.

"He is a guy who will get better and become a multi format player.

"With George, although he sadly has had this problem with a stress fracture, he is very much part of our future so securing George at this stage we felt was necessary and we welcome having him as part of our set-up.

"He is a bloke who is taller than Tonguey and with a lot of attributes like Tonguey. He can make the ball bounce, and has got a bit of pace, and those sort of credentials are what we want at Worcester.

"George's credentials and promise has not just been recognised by us, it's been recognised by England with the Under-19s call-up and being part of a Young Lions training camp this winter.

"When you've got someone who is six feet, seven inches tall who can bowl a lively ball, why wouldn't you want to secure someone long term and look after our own players we've developed through our academy.

"I'm confident one day we will see Tonguey and George opening the bowling. There is no guarantee of success being around the corner but we want to give people opportunities, particularly the ones we've grown."

Rhodes added: "George and Ollie have been involved in our programme for a long time and we also want to show faith in them because we put in so much hard work and they put in so much hard work to try and be successful.

"I know both of them are delighted to be part of our set-up and long may that continue."
