WORCESTERSHIRE overseas player Travis Head will link up with his new team mates at Blackfinch New Road on April 5.

The Australian batsman will fly in a week ahead of the opening Specsavers County Championship match with Hampshire at the Ageas Bowl.

Head coach Kevin Sharp said Head who skippered the Adelaide Strikers to Big Bash glory will play in an internal practice match before the campaign begins.

Sharp is relishing the prospect of working with the 24-year-old who plays regular white ball cricket for his country but is also keen to force his way into the Test side.

"Travis leaves us for about a month in June but then we've got him for most of the season," Sharp said.

"He is a fine young player who has got aspirations to go on and play Test cricket for Australia.

"I think Australia are quite keen for their players to get some experience in England with a big series coming up in a year or two.

"That works well certainly for us in the fact we've got this guy who is going to be very hungry and very keen to want to do well in English conditions.

"I'm sure we are going to get some great benefits from that.

"He led the Adelaide Strikers to the Big Bash title so his experience in all formats is going to stand us in good stead.

"It's a while since we had an overseas batter at the club so that will add strength in depth in that department."

Head will head to Worcestershire on the back of a successful campaign with the bat for South Australia in the Sheffield Shield.

The left-hander led by example as captain by scoring 738 runs in eight matches.

Head hit two centuries and four fifties in 16 innings and finished with an average of 46.12.

He finished third in the SA averages and was also his team’s third highest run-scorer behind Callum Ferguson – 780 at 48.75 – and Jake Weatherald – 765 at 38.25.

But Head’s own fine efforts could not prevent SA from finishing bottom of the six team table with two wins, six losses and two draws.

Worcestershire returned this week from an 11 day training camp in Abu Dhabi and will take on Somerset tomorrow (Friday) in a game reduced from two to one days because of the recent severe weather in the South West.

That will be followed next Tuesday with a 50 over match versus Gloucestershire at Bristol followed by a two day match at the same venue.
