WORCESTERSHIRE head coach Kevin Sharp hopes veteran paceman Steve Magoffin will be fit for Friday’s County Championship Division One clash with Surrey at the Kia Oval.

Magoffin played in the first two league games but missed the home thrashing by Nottinghamshire due to a hamstring strain.

But he has been bowling and will have another run-out before Friday.

Sharp said: “Steve, all being well, will be available for The Oval. He just had a tight hamstring at the end of the last game at Somerset and has been working on that with the physio.”

Charlie Morris made his first senior appearance for 19 months as Magoffin’s replacement against Notts but the County crashed by an innings and 41 runs.

While his team-mates have struggled for early-season form, Ed Barnard’s impressive start puts him sixth in the PCA Most Valuable Player rankings for the Championship.

The County all-rounder has 81.75 points at an average of 27.25 per game after taking 14 wickets at 18.71 and scoring 155 runs at 31.00.

Captain Joe Leach, who has finished in the top 10 for the past three seasons, is 17th with 14 wickets at an average of 20.86.

Josh Tongue is 24th with 11 wickets while 37th-placed Travis Head is the County’s leading run-getter with 174 at 34.80.

Meanwhile, Daryl Mitchell scored 113 as five first-team batsmen spent time in the middle in today’s Second XI Trophy home clash with Warwickshire.

Mitchell went to three figures off 97 balls with 13 fours as the County, who elected to bat first, totalled 317-6.

Fellow opener Joe Clarke scored just eight, Tom Fell 33, Brett D’Oliveira 56 batting at number four and George Rhodes 29 not out.

Ben Twohig added 30no and Ross Whiteley fell for 18.

The County had been dismissed for just 110 and 149 by Notts.
