Radio 4 listeners may have received a shock this morning after expecting to hear the Today Programme and instead hearing Stormzy’s – Shut Up blaring out of their car radio.
The track was used as part of presenter John Humphrys’ report into the upcoming Brit Awards which has drawn controversy because there are no hip hop or grime artists amongst the nominees. Humphrys spoke with music writer Peter Doggett, and took listeners on a quick journey through the genre, culminating in Stormzy.
However Humphrys wasn’t done there, as the report ended he attempted to spit some bars of his own leaving some listeners thinking they might still be asleep.
Some people thought the Today presenter himself should be nominated for a Brit following the skit.
The Mastermind host does have history in the hip hop world – in 2014 he collaborated with rapper and producer Charlie Sloth on this track.
