WAR Horse, the record-breaking theatre phenomenon, has finally galloped back into Birmingham.

After eight record-breaking years in the West End and having played in 11 countries around the world, the National Theatre’s multi award-winning production has trotted onto Birmingham Hippodrome’s stage for a strictly limited run.

The powerfully moving tale of loyalty, war and loss has been enjoyed by more than seven million spectators and won 25 major awards.

At the outbreak of the First World War, young Albert’s dear horse Joey is sold to the Cavalry and shipped to France, where he is soon caught up in enemy fire.

Fate takes Joey on an extraordinary journey, serving on both sides of the war, while Albert sets out on a treacherous mission to bring his best friend home.

Staying true to the Michael Morpurgo novel, the play tells a harrowing and likely story of war through a horse’s eyes – a challenge for even the most imaginative playwright.

Stourbridge News:

But Nick Stafford’s powerful adaptation manages to brilliantly capture the fierce bond that can exist between humans and animals.

Breath-taking wooden creations by the Handspring Puppet Company are brought to life through mesmerising choreography, as three actors move and vocalise in harmony to create a three-dimensional creature that is as real as the people acting alongside it.

The staging tells a story by itself. A ripped page from a notebook forms a cinematic backdrop, simultaneously portraying the true timeline of the First World War, aided by a dramatic soundtrack of battle sounds and folk songs.

Every gunshot heightens the emotion and drama on stage, acting as a terrifying reminder of the true tragedies of war. War Horse is an unforgettable story and, 100 years on from the end of the conflict, a fitting tribute to lives lost.

The production runs at the Hippodrome from Wednesday, October 10 to Saturday, November 3, with tickets from £29.50. For more information, and to book tickets, visit birminghamhippodrome.com or call 0844 338 5000.
