A STOURBRIDGE builder has picked up a top national award for eco-friendly work in a Birmingham house revamp.

Mike Wall, from MT Wall, Hagley Road, fought off competition from 1,500 entrants to scoop the Federation of Master Builders awards in London.

TV presenter Sarah Beeny presented Mike with the award for best energy efficient builder in Britain after his company was nominated by a housing association in Birmingham.

Mike said: "I am very pleased, it's not something we looked for it just happened, we were doing work in the house when they came and asked us to incorporate their changes."

Mike's client, The Family Housing Association, nominated M T Wall after a project at a Victorian terrace generated interest from council officers and government ministers.

The environmental improvements to the property included a wind turbine which provides power to the home, with surplus electricity being sold back to the National Grid.

Other features include solar-powered heating, a sunpipe to provide natural light, low energy light bulbs and measures to save and conserve water.

MT Wall has already collected the 2006 Midlands award in the same category and Mike will now be celebrating national success by claiming his prize of a luxury weekend at a top hotel.
