Clothes that shimmer and shine are usually reserved for party season glamour in the depths of winter.

But this year metallics are a must-have for the sunny summer months too. Be prepared to glisten in gold and sparkle in silver: metallic fever is taking the fashion world by storm.

"As seen on the catwalk and high street, metallics are a strong trend for the summer," says Emily Fleuriot, editor at Fashion Monitor.

"They look great with a tan and can add a harder edge to an otherwise girly summer frock. Metallics is a great trend to buy into."

Metal-phobics take note: this is a versatile trend, whether you want to go space age in lavish silver, or prefer a luxurious look in precious metals like bronze and gold.

For fresh summer style, less intrepid fashionistas can always wear their shimmer pared down with something more standard like a crisp white shirt.

So get your glitz on.

There's no excuse not to shine this season.

Burberry showcased crystal-studded frocks and Dolce & Gabbana sent shiny candy-wrapper corset dresses down the spring/summer catwalks. Some may recoil at the very thought of shiny fabrics and futuristic metalwear, but metallics can flatter anyone if you choose the right shade for you.

Picking out a muted metallic like gunmetal - not a toffee-wrapper gold or tinfoil silver - makes the trend more wearable.

"There are variations on the metallic theme," Emily says. "Think brown, pewter and rose gold as well as the standard yellow gold and silver.

"In my opinion, there's no rules when it comes to metallics.

"The best bet is to look at a colour which adds radiance to your skin tone and/or wardrobe."

There are always those who want to embrace a trend at full speed. If you're loving the magic properties of metallic, go top-to-toe with a dress or jacket that will brighten even a black aficionado's look.

"Let's face it, it's a small minority of women who are going to look great in a silver catsuit, but there are ways to wear metallics which aren't going to hurt," Emily reassures.

"The younger among us can get away with metallic leggings (just) and a shimmer finish inarguably adds to the specialness of a party dress."

Still feeling scared about silver and gold?

The most accessible way to work the metallic look is with on-trend accessories.

"I would be looking for statement bags and wedge sandals - accessories to add an element of metallic rather than too much," Emily advises.

"If you want to play it safe check out the plethora of shoes and bags available on the high street. A flash of silver adds a bit of glamour to everyday fashions."
