STAUNCH supporters of Mary Stevens Hospice refused to let rain get the better of them when they staged a picnic in the park at historic Hagley Hall.

Visitors were offered a rare opportunity to walk the idyllic grounds, taking in the restored waterfall and scenic gardens.

But the planned picnic and barbecue had to be abandoned because of the weather.

The event had been organised by long time hospice champion Sue Williams who had obtained exclusive access to the hall from Lord Cobham.

However the weather played its part in restricting the number of visitors. But despite the low turn-out, the event still managed to raise £350.

Fellow organiser Mike Williams praised all the supporters who turned out to help and said: “After a three month heatwave, what were the odds of gale force winds and heavy rain.

“The conditions meant the idea of running a barbecue and raffle had to be abandoned as it simply wasn't safe to put up the gazebo in front of the hall.

“Yet despite everything, Sue's team of volunteers all arrived at the allotted time dressed in winter waterproofs and thermals to carry on without complaint.

“They showed an admirable stiff upper lip as they strode out into the elements to take up positions on deer park gates and ancient monuments.

“Both Sue and I are so grateful to them for their attitude and commitment.”

Charlotte Schofield, head of fundraising at Mary Stevens Hospice, also paid tribute to those who braved the bad weather, adding: “To know that there are members of our community out there in the wind and rain, making the best of truly awful weather to make care possible for our patients is simply overwhelming.

“What they've raised is enough to pay for two patients to attend our day care services unit, which goes far beyond monetary value for the families who will benefit from that care.”

The picnic in the park was the second in a series of five events being run by Sue Williams to support the hospice in 2018.

Other events include an evening with Dr Norman Croucher, a charity fashion show and a day trip to Blenheim Palace.
