THOUSANDS of people visited the Black Country Boating Festival in Netherton this weekend.

Now in its 33rd year, the volunteer-run event had more than 200 boat, trade and charity stalls, canal side entertainment, competitions, a funfair, real ale bar and live entertainment for visitors to enjoy.

Festival director Paddy Grice, said: "It was a very successful weekend.

"The feedback was very positive - people said it was good to see live bands and the variety of music was welcomed."

Mr Grice said visitors were also pleased to see the approaches to the Netherton Tunnel Footbridge had been re-tarmacked by festival volunteers and the Canal and River Trust.

Dudley's Deputy Mayor, Councillor Hilary Bills was also in attendance and enjoyed a boat trip along the Dudley No 2 canal, tour of the site and a performance by Bhangra Smash Up.

Preparations are already under way for next year's festival, which will take place on September 14 and 15.
