STOURBRIDGE Young Labour will host a screening of the film Pride next week.

The critically acclaimed motion picture was released in 2014 and tells the story of a group of activists from Lesbians and Gays Support the Miners’ Strike.

The screening is open to all and before the film a number of guest speakers will address the audience, including the leader of Dudley Council, Councillor Pete Lowe.

Cllr Lowe, who is also Labour's parliamentary candidate for Stourbridge, said: "I am delighted that Stourbridge Young Labour has organised a screening of Pride and honoured to be asked to speak at the event.

"The story behind the film emphasises the importance of reaching out to others in your community and standing together against oppression.

"The film holds great personal significance to me because it was during the miner’s strike in the 1980s that my political values were forged and I first became involved with campaigning for worker’s rights."

The film was chosen by Stourbridge Young Labour because of its timeless theme of solidarity and inspiring message about organising for to create effective change, according to 18-year-old Lou Pardoe, the LGBT officer for the Stourbridge Labour Party.

He continued: "We are organising this screening to celebrate the advances that the LGBTQ movement has made over the last forty years but also to shine a light on the battles not yet won.

"Namely the struggle for equality for those who do not fit neatly within binary gender and those who do not feel comfortable in the gender they were assigned at birth.

"Pride means a great deal to me and gives me hope that solidarity and community can overcome prejudice."

The screening of Pride will be held at Green Duck Brewery on the Gainsborough Trading Estate in Rufford Road on Tuesday, October 9.

Doors open at 7pm.
