REMEMBER remember the firework code this 5th of November.

Those having firework parties tonight on Bonfire Night or planning to celebrate the occasion later this week are urged to remember the Firework Code and stay safe this season.

Top Ten Safety Code for Adults:

• Plan any firework display to make it safe and enjoyable.

• Keep fireworks in a closed box and use them one at a time.

• Read and follow the instructions on each firework using a torch if necessary.

• Light the firework at arm's length with a taper and stand well back.

• Keep naked flames, including cigarettes, away from fireworks.

• Never return to a firework once it has been lit.

• Don't put fireworks in pockets and never throw them.

• Direct any rocket fireworks well away from spectators.

• Never use paraffin or petrol on a bonfire.

• Make sure the fire is out and surroundings are made safe before leaving.

West Midlands Police has also issued a reminder to members of the public that they should not set off fireworks in any public place.

The force is also reminding people that fireworks must not be set off between 11pm and 7am on days other than Bonfire Night (tonight - November 5), New Year's Eve, Diwali and Chinese New Year.
