A NURSERY under threat of closure has been given a reprieve with education bosses pledging to keep it open until next summer at least.

The News reported last month that Little Colliers Day Nursery in Colley Lane, Colley Gate could be shut down by Windsor Academy Trust, which runs the neighbouring Colley Lane Primary school.

However, parents campaigned against the proposed closure and received the backing of MP Margot James as well as local councillors.

A decision over the nursery’s future was set to be made at the end of November but the Trust has now confirmed it will remain open in the short-term – although it’s longer-term viability remains in question.

Ms James said she was delighted by the news, after concerns had been raised that the nursery would close its doors in January after experiencing a cash shortfall.

She said: “I am thrilled that the nursery will remain open at least until the end of the academic year. It gives the board a chance to look at ways in which it can remain open permanently.

“Early years education is a fundamental part of a child’s development.

“When I was approached by anxious parents regarding the threat of its closure, I shared their concerns and made it a priority to work on their behalf for a solution.

“I had a positive conversation with the director of the trust a few weeks ago, and I remain hopeful moving forward.”

Aziz Shah, one of the parents leading the campaign against the proposed closure, also welcomed the Trust’s decision but said she would not be resting on her laurels.

She added: “It’s half the battle won but obviously we want it to remain open beyond next year for the younger children.

“The nursery is a necessity for the local community and we are hopeful of overturning the original decision to close it.”

A statement from Windsor Academy Trust chief executive officer Keith Sorrell said: “I can confirm that, following a request from the school to delay any closure until the end of the academic year and reading through the excellent responses from the consultation, Little Colliers will remain open until the end of the academic year.

“The board discussion at the end of the month will discuss the long term future of Little Colliers and will enable a more detailed consideration of all the factors involved.

“I hope that removing the prospect of any January decision will give staff and parents reassurance for the immediate future.”
