POLICE in Dudley have been granted Section 60 ‘stop and search’ powers for a third night running.

From 6pm this evening (December 7) until 3am tomorrow morning (December 8), officers will be using Section 60 powers in St Thomas’s ward including the Kate’s Hill area and in parts of the St James, Castle and Priory, Netherton Woodside and St Andrews wards, and in Dudley to tackle violent crime.

The extra powers allow officers to stop and search people without reasonable grounds but where there is a risk of violence or weapons being used.

Chief Superintendent for Dudley, Sally Bourner, said: “The decision to use section 60 powers is not one we take lightly, but is in response to events in the borough this week.

“It’s another step in our relentless fight against violence and knife crime in Dudley, and I hope the community feel reassured by the presence of extra officers.

“Although the powers are extremely effective at preventing serious crime, and taking weapons of the street, it’s not solely about arresting offenders.

"It’s a valuable opportunity for officers to engage with businesses and residents in the local area, and discuss concerns.”

Tonight, local police teams will be joined by officers from West Midlands Police Response, Firearms and the Force Support Unit.

The priority is to prevent crime and protect the public from harm.

Any information about violent crime or suspicious activity should be reported to police on 101, or 999 in an emergency.
